My Darling Patricia’s work is inspired by photographs and found objects; the detritus and residue of stories. The company name comes from one such find - a 60 year old secret love letter found inside the lining of an old vanity set. On carefully folded, yellowed, lined paper, the letter began with the words “To My Darling Patricia…"
Founded in Sydney in 2004, My Darling Patricia (MDP) creates original, interdisciplinary Australian theatre through a collaborative process. Led by Artistic Directors Halcyon Macleod and Clare Britton. My Darling Patricia engages with an inspired exploration of contemporary Australian Theatre. The company prizes a rigorous artistic process that harnesses a team of dedicated interdisciplinary artists to deliver works of great visual power with real guts and soul. MDP creates work that pushes the boundaries of contemporary Australian theatre and invites audiences to step inside their inventive highly visual storytelling style. My Darling Patricia brings to life a shared vision that contributes a unique and idiosyncratic voice and aesthetic to the local context.
My Darling Patricia has created seven award winning productions working together with associate artists and presenters at Sydney Festival, Carriageworks, Melbourne’s Arts House Meat Market, The Victorian Arts Centre (FULLTILT), The Malthouse Theatre, Sydney’s The Performance Space and Adelaide’s Vitalstatistix. Their breakthrough production Politely Savage won Best Theatre Act at the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2007, Outstanding Production and Best Design at the Melbourne Fringe Festival 2006 and Best Independent Theatre Show at the Sydney Theatre Critics’ Award in 2006. Africa received the Malcolm Robertson Prize in 2009 and in 2010 was shortlisted for the Helpmann Award for Best Physical or Visual Theatre Production. Africa toured six major performing arts venues around Australia in 2011 and concluded the tour with a celebrated season at Sydney Theatre Company. My Darling Patricia's most recent work, The Piper premiered at Sydney Festival in 2014 to great acclaim and was presented by Underbelly UK at Edinburgh Fringe in 2015. The Piper is available for touring 2017.
