Koedal (Crocodile) and Waumer (Frigate Bird) woman Ghenoa, is a strong Torres Strait Islander from Rockhampton, Central Queensland. Her background is in Torres Strait Islander dancing and since receiving a Diploma in Careers in Dance, she has been a Sydney based Independent Artist working across several mediums including Dance, Circus, Television and Stage. In 2013, Ghenoa has participated in: Force Majeure’s ‘Cultivate’ as a Choreographer/Director, Critical Path’s ‘Responsive Residency’ and Next Wave’s ‘Kickstart’ program. Other credits include: Host at ‘Stylin’ Up’, MC for Circus Oz 2012 show ‘From the Ground Up’, Host/Choreographer on Move it Mob Style’ TV-Series (Deadly Vibe Australia 2011/2012, NITV/ABC3), Performer in Briwyant (Van Hout 2011, Performance Space), Performer in Happy as Larry (Shaun Parker 2009-2011, Marguerite Pepper Productions) and Performer in Wagana Like Lyre bird & Eagle (Jo Clancy 2010, Dreaming Festival). Ghenoa facilitates dance workshops in urban, regional and remote communities and has just returned from conducting dance workshops at the inaugural Boomerang Festival and the Moorambilla Festival in regional and remote NSW. She is inspired by her family’s stories and wants to increase awareness of her Torres Strait Islander culture through her emerging dance company, ‘Malungoka’ and she is excited to be currently developing her own work ‘Winds of Woerr’ as part of the Next Wave Festival 2014.
